While at EngageMedia I had the pleasure of working with Nova Ruth, an Indonesian MC, translator, activist, technologist and coffee shop proprietor. This is one of the sites that I’ve volunteered to host for Nova.

When I was lecturing in Translation and Technology at Monash University I helped one of my Masters students to set up a simple business card website. I used WordPress with a multilingual plugin so that the site content could be viewed in Spanish and English. WordPress is perfect for business card sites as it is very easy for non technical users to update at a later time on their own – helping reduce their IT support costs.

Critical Commons is an online resource for film educators that pushes the boundaries of fair use (copyright) legislation by making clips from films available with academic commentaries, in both text and audio format. The site, devised by the USC School of Cinematic Arts Institute for Multimedia Literacy, enables lecturers to organise collections of clips and commentaries as lectures for classroom delivery. The website is built on the Plumi (created by EngageMedia), a free open source software video sharing web application based on the Plone content management system.

In terms of functionality, the site encompasses features from Plumi including server-side transcoding and Flash video playback – building features such as grouping clips into lectures on top of this, and a substantial re-design and re-architecture of the user-interface.

Critical Commons

EngageMedia is media-activist non-profit organisation based in Australia and Indonesia. The four major areas of program work are content, training, network-building and software development. EngageMedia distributes an ever-expanding archive of social-justice and environmenal video Asia-Pacific online via the engagemedia.org website. Video-makers in Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia and beyond have been trained in online video distribution skills, and are brought together to discuss content and distribution issues at events such as Transmission Asia-Pacific. Software development focuses around the Plumi video-sharing platform, built on the Plone CMS and available as free open source software for other video communities to use.
